First off the impending war in Iraq was never to exact a measure of revenge for the attacks of September 11th...thats what the operation(s) in Afghanistan, Pakistan Qatar, and Yemen was/is for. The soon to be launched war in Iraq is to enforce 12 year old sanctions levied by the United Nations that stipulated that Saddam MUST disarm...notice the strong wording...it wasnt a suggestion...the UN and the US in particular didnt say "pretty please with sugar on top wouldya couldya stop producing weapons that are outlawed by international law" we/they DEMANDED IT. Now Saddam, in his infinite arrogance, has essentially thumbed his nose at not only the US but the entire populace of planet earth by not only REFUSING to destroy what he already had but INSTEAD producing more weapons and nerve agents/ biological/chemical weapons, and found more cunning ways to hide them. Now Mr Bush has taken it upon himself, with a certain degree of political wrecklessness, to MAKE SURE that Saddam is complying with resolutions already handed down through the international community. For those that cant seem to follow the course of events as theyre laid out...let me try to simplify it just a tad. Lets say little Johnny attends your school (or the school of one of your kids), well during a locker inspection a school official finds a Glock 9mm semi-auto pistol with 500 rounds of ammunition stored neatly between his Qaran and History book. The school administrator tells little Johnny "school REGULATIONS dictate that you cant have weapons on campus" and calls the local law agency and little Johnny's parents. Little Johnny has certain "sanctions" levied against him and to have SOME of them lifted little Johnny promises to be a good boy, and is allowed to return to school. 12 weeks later a school official stops Little Johnny as he enters the school because the metal detector goes off as he passes under it. The official has Johnny empty his pockets and then goes through his backpack, in which he finds that same Glock with the same amount of ammunition..now what does he do? Does he write the state asking them if he can punish little johnny, when theres already a REGULATION on the books thats says little johnny isnt supposed to have a weapon in school? Does that school official have to wait for every other school official in his district to ok him punishing little Johnny for breaking a REGULATION he said he was going to follow? HELL NO!! that school official takes the weapon, removes little johnny from the school, and thusly restores a level of security for everyone else at school who follows the rules. That is essentially what the US is trying to accomplish...were trying to get a bully to play by rules he already agreed to.....he doesnt want to follow, and we got the paperwork sufficient to justify us planting him 6 feet under. And the playground just got a little bit safer........
